Relationships 101: How to build a long lasting relationship with the media

By Rachel Shaver

You've launched your press release and have been on the phone with editors and analysts for days on end. The ink has dried, the dust has settled and you're happy with the results. Now what?

When it comes to media relations, follow-up practices are just as important as initial outreach activities. Taking time for prompt and appropriate follow-up can pay big dividends in terms of building lasting relationships with press and analysts. Here are some tips to help you maintain contact after the interview is over.

  • Send a thank-you note. Always send a note thanking editors and analysts for their time to meet with you. In addition to making a nice impression, it is an excellent opportunity to provide any resources referenced during your discussion and make sure your contact information is easily accessible in case they have additional questions.
  • Pass on industry resources relevant to their coverage areas. Periodically sharing information related to something you discussed lets editors know you understand the topics that they cover and that you can be counted on as a trusted resource. Just be sure the information is useful and relevant so you don't unnecessarily overload their inbox.
  • Leverage tradeshow and industry event presence to catch up. Check event press lists to see if contacts you work with will be in attendance. Then check to see if you can arrange a few minutes to meet face-to-face.
  • Continue to read what they're writing. See what they're covering, how their coverage of your topic evolves and discuss their recent coverage when you are in contact with them.
  • Reference previous discussions when fresh news surfaces. Referring to previous interviews helps reinforce the subjects you can speak to and signifies that you valued your last conversation.

Consistently using these tips can help you begin to develop a reputation as a key source for news and information. Still not sure how to keep the buzz going? Contact Nereus today to find out how we can help.
